What a hectic few years it has been for the troubled Scream franchise, but thankfully in a recent interview for IndieWire, Neve Campbell says the next chapter will start filming in about five months.
“I’m very, very happy it’s happening,” Campbell told IndieWire. “We were supposed to start in September, but we’re going to start in December now because of some scheduling stuff with Kevin and myself and having that all aligned. And actually, I think it’s a good thing, because we’re going to be able to have the time to get it really right. So I’m very excited about it.”
As she should be. The rebooted series has been under a harsh spotlight ever since 2022 when the requel was released. Some people thought it was a great homage to Wes Craven’s originals while others felt it lacked his charm.
We were introduced to our new final girl Sam Carpenter played by Melissa Barrera who is susceptible to mental health issues given her genealogical past. Although the movie brought back some legacy characters including Sydney Prescott (Campbell), they took a backseat to the newer cast.
Campbell was then cut from the next film apparently for not accepting what they wanted to pay her but Barrera returned as Sam. Sadly, she would not return as that character in the upcoming Scream 7 for a variety of allegations, and its original director, Chris Landon, said he was also pulling out. Furthermore, Jenna Ortega who plays Tara (another main character) said she was also not returning for the latest installment.
Studio damage control included bringing back Neve and hiring original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson to direct.
While some fans think the series should have died long ago, others are curious as to which direction Scream 7 will take. With its two main characters from the reboot gone, will the next Ghostface killer tie into those two movies or will he/she be a stand-alone? And will our setting remain in the big city or relocate to its roots in Woodsboro?
We will find out soon enough as Scream 7 is scheduled for a 2025 release date.
