Writer Kevin Williamson, the man who created Scream, and I Know What You Did Last Summer is starting out 2023 by putting us all back into the pandemic with his very first original feature film screenplay since Cursed in 2005.
The prolific horror screenplay writer was a cinematic mainstay in the latter 90s and early 2000s, but after disappointing box office results for both Cursed (2005) and his uncredited Venom (2005), Williamson wouldn’t return to his slasher roots until 2011’s Scream 4. Between that time he had seen great success as a screenwriter for the TV series The Vampire Diaries (2009).
There is a certain formula to Williamson’s slashers. Usually, a young adult is stalked by a killer, whether that menace is human or supernatural.
That signature is apparent in the new film Sick which he wrote and releases on Peacock on January 13. Directed by John Hyams, the plot seems like a Williamson boilerplate with all the nostalgiac trappings of a 90s killer-thriller:
“As the pandemic steadily brings the world to a halt, Parker and her best friend Miri decide to quarantine at the family lake house alone—or so they think.” — Logline
The Williamson/Hyams team-up feels like a perfect match. Hyams directed the 2020 psycho-thriller Alone about a woman being pursued by a deranged serial killer. That movie currently holds a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
