A24 is known for bringing us some wild horror films over the years. However, Death of a Unicorn is a bit different than their normal rollout. While the studio is typically known for their high art horror, they seem to be putting their attention into horror comedies as of late. Whether this plan will work out for them in the long run is yet to be seen but Death of a Unicorn looks downright whimsical.
The film follows Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) as a father daughter duo who accidentally kill a Unicorn with their car. Seeing this as an opportunity to make a buck, Rudd plans to use the Unicorn’s curative properties at a pharmaceutical company. However, the mythical beast’s family does not take kindly to this affront.
This will mark the directorial debut of Alex Scharfman, who also wrote the script for the film. Not only that but John Carpenter (Halloween) and his son Cody Carpenter are tagging along to provide the film’s score. All in all, Death of a Unicorn has some heavy hitters involved.
A24 had a somewhat disappointing year in 2024, and some fans have begun to lose hope in what was once the king of elevated horror. Hopefully, the mixture of amazing talent and a unique concept will bring the studio back into the good graces of horror fans in the years to come. Death of A Unicorn is scheduled for release in the spring of 2025.
