After we saw and forever fell in love with the completely – bonkers James Wan film Malignant, we are in for everything that he does. It appears more than any other big studio filmmaker, he is making films for himself. M3GAN is from a story of Wan’s and will even be produced by Wan over at Blumhouse.
M3GAN is directed by Gerard Johnstone and will star Get Out’s Allison Williams. This one sounds like it will be in the same vein as Wes Craven’s Deadly Friend.
The synopsis for M3GAN goes like this:
Gemma, a brilliant roboticist at a toy company who uses artificial intelligence to develop, M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to be a kid’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. After unexpectedly gaining custody of her orphaned niece, Gemma enlists the help of the M3GAN prototype – a decision that has unimaginable consequences.
Sounds like we are getting a cross-pollination of horror with elements from Steven Spielberg’s AI and Craven’s Deadly Friend. We are very okay with those additives.
The film being produced by Wan’s Atomic Monster and Blum’s Blumhouse is getting a release date of January 13, 2023. This will give the film a Friday the 13th release date and what’s not to love about heading out to the cinema to check out a horror film on Friday the 13? All that and it falls on the long weekend that is Martin Luther King Day weekend.
