“IT” Set to Surpass Some of the Highest Grossing Horror Movies
As much as we all love horror movies, they are notorious for not making as much at the box office as romantic comedies or action movies. It would seem that the new adaption to IT is changing all of that. According to IndieWire, for a horror movie to be considered successful, an opening weekend of $40-50 million would be great but the totals for the opening weekend of IT blows that all away.
In its first few days, the much anticipated remake raked in a full $123 million in its final count. For a horror movie, that’s almost unheard of and the movie is joining the ranks of the highest grossing horror movies of all time. While we have to wait until the second weekend to see how that number will multiply but it could double meaning that $500 million worldwide is entirely possible.
The highest grossing movie of all time is The Exorcist bringing in $983 million since 1973. The top ten list is all adjusted numbers and over many years and IT is carving away at their totals in just days, a more than impressive feat. It’s almost surpassed Get Out which blew away the horror community and even surpassed the opening weekend of Wonder Woman, one of the most highly loved movies of this decade.
Check out the top ten of the highest grossing horror of all time, adjusted for changing ticket prices.
- The Exorcist (1973) $983 million
- The Sixth Sense (1999) $512 million
- House of Wax (1954) $449 million
- Psycho (1960) $379 million
- Signs (2002) $345 million
- The Mummy Returns (2001) $317 million
- The Amityville Horror (1979) $306 million
- Alien (1979) $283 million
- The Mummy (1999) $271 million
- What Lies Beneath (2000) $256 million
This will be the highest grossing Stephen King adaptation to date. IT will soon pass The Blair Witch Project and Poltergeist in numbers and it seems there is very little that can stop this speeding train. If you can’t enough of it, we have a lot more for you. Whether you need a review, details from the inevitable second chapter, or watching people freak out as they watch the movie, we have you covered.
