Robert Eggers has proven that his nuance as an independent director lands somewhere between folk horror and art house. But how well will he do with a remake of a classic? It’s time to find out as his latest movie Nosferatu is rounding out the year in theaters on Christmas Day.

His movies are usually divisive among horror movie fans. For every negative criticism they get, two are generally positive; while critics’ scores are high, audience scores tend to be lower.

As a former production designer, Eggers leans heavily into that craft to tell his stories. Therefore, Nosferatu might be the perfect film for him to direct because of its epic setting, haunted characters, and monstrous villain.

Nosferatu itself is a rogue adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The names have been changed and some of the plot points are different, but overall it tells the same story. This is evident in the synopsis for the current film: “A gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”

Take a look at the trailer below and tell us if you’re a fan of Eggers’ previous theatrical works which normally start with the word “the.”

Nosferatu stars, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe. It opens theatrically on December 25.
