HBO Max’s ‘The Baby’ First Episode Creeps Under Your Skin & Stays There

Want Something Different, Horror Fans?

by Trey Hilburn III

If you are constantly looking for something that is outside the box – as well as challenging in the horror genre. Please, look no further than The Baby on HBO Max. Not to be confused with the awesomely bizarre 1973 Ted Post film by the same name, this all-new series centers on a mysterious baby who is all-out creepy and just might be the anti-Christ… or something.

The first episode of the new 8-episode run, begins with a woman hurling herself off a sea-side cliff.  She is shortly followed by a baby who crawls off the same cliff also hurling itself off. I mean talk about starting with a big WTF bang right?

The official synopsis for The Baby goes like this:

When 38-year-old Natasha is unexpectedly landed with a baby, her life of doing what she wants, when she wants, dramatically implodes. Controlling, manipulative and with violent powers, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a horror show. Where does it come from? What does it want? And what lengths will Natasha have to go to in order to get her life back? She doesn’t want a baby. The baby wants her.

BabyThere is quite a bit of mystery in the first episode with very little in the way of answers coming your way. Michelle de Swarte is at the center of the story and takes the role absolutely masterfully. She plays the part with a heavy emotional reluctance in an all out nightmarish, maternal-vignette wormhole.

Writers, Sophie Goodhart, Kara Smith, Anchuli Felicia King and Susan Stanton are all seemingly loaning very real emotional beats from the challenging kerfuffle that motherhood is. All this coming from a position of someone who isn’t ready to take on the role of motherhood. All that while combining those moments in with a creeping and very real horror that lays in wait around every corner. The Baby is wrought with terror, but it also has a really dry biting humor to it as well. It essentially creates something that you might find if we lived in a multiverse in which Edgar Wright took on the aftermath of Rosemary’s Baby. Like, what happens after Mia Farrow discovers her baby in that black crib? What happens next? Well, this could very well be the answer…  possibly.

BabyWhile there aren’t very many answers giving in the first episode, I will say that I think that this series looks to become very witchy and cultish down the line. The trailer below hints at what you can expect from the rest of the season. We are excited about marching onward with this series and continuing to be creeped the hell out with bouts of levity in which we find that the evil, killer baby is sorta adorable.

You can watch the first episode of The Baby right now. The remaining 7 episodes will air every Sunday night from May 1 to June 12.
