IFC Midnight is on a roll as of late. The trailer for Hatching is one of those trailers that innately gets under your skin. From its creeping sound design to the skewed color palette, this film looks to go for scares using artful cinematic execution. The strange as hell trailer literally gave us the chills.
One day while sitting around with a creepy family, a bird flies into the home of a young girl. The chance encounter ends with her discovering a mysterious egg that the young girl decides to raise and nest as though she was the mother. Now, what comes out of the egg is the stuff of Lovecratian text terrors.
What looks to begin as a bald carrion nightmare, quickly becomes a creature that seems to mimic and mirror that of the young girl. This leads to the young girl raising a body-horror-inspired twin.
The synopsis for Hatching goes like this:
12-year-old Tinja is desperate to please her mother, a woman obsessed with presenting the image of a perfect family. One night, Tinja finds a strange egg. What hatches is beyond belief.
We are deeply impressed with this fairy-tale nightmare. This Finnish tale looks to adopt characteristics of folk terror while also imbuing revenge horror sensibilities.
The film stars Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkilä, Saija Lentonen, Jani Volanen and is directed by Hanna Bergholm.
Hatching arrives in theaters and on VOD beginning April 29.
