Halloween Ends is almost here but it sounds like the film continues to go through some minor tinkering and changes, especially with regards to the very end of the film. I suppose an ending is ever-important when your film is partly named “Ends“. But, director David Gordon Green has been tinkering with the ending ever since the film had a special test screening audience.
“I speak with John and Jamie Lee Curtis regularly about it,” Green told Empire. “It’s exciting, uncertain, satisfying, and sad. I’ve enjoyed the ride but it’s probably time to get off. I think we’re gonna go out with a bang.”
Empire Magazine’s full interview with Green goes into more detail about Halloween but it sounds like Green just hasn’t nailed down what he wants for an ending in terms of timing. So, the changes haven’t been large narrative reshoots, instead, they have been quick edits. Even now with the film “locked” Green continues to call the editor with ideas for last, last, last-minute tinkering.
I can understand how this is something that Green wants to land perfectly. He has spent a few years of his life living with Mike, so I can’t blame him for wanting to get the ending so specifically in tune and in line with what is going to blow audiences away the most. I mean nightmare scenario is that he ruins the ending and it goes down as one of the worst Halloween entries ever. That thought alone makes me personally want to go and edit the ending myself. Plus, Green is at the mercy of insanely rabid and toxic fans.
Halloween Ends arrives in theaters and streaming on Peacock.
