Have you ever tried to binge 28 Days Later movies but couldn’t find the original anywhere except on your personal collector’s shelf? Well worry no more Sony Pictures is finally releasing the horror classic on VOD starting December 18.
The first movie was released in 2002 and a sequel, 28 Weeks Later, in 2007. Director Danny Boyle teamed with writer Alex Garland for “Days,” however Boyle didn’t return for the sequel. That duty went to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
Boyle and Garland return for the upcoming sequel, 28 Years Later, which will get a theatrical release on June 20, 2025.
28 Days Later was unique in that it was the first mainstream movie to introduce fast-moving zombies to the genre. Although not technically zombies, they are infected with a rage-inducing virus, the creatures jump, dash, and attack with animal-like veracity.
Here is the synopsis:
“Animal rights activists free a group of infected chimpanzees to horrifying results in this speculative sci-fi horror effort from writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle. Waking from a coma in a deserted London hospital 28 days later, bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) takes to the deserted city streets in a state of mystified confusion.
Joining forces with another group of survivors following a terrifying encounter in a seemingly abandoned church, Jim soon learns the truth behind the deserted streets and the menacing creatures that lurk in the shadows. It’s soon revealed that the chimpanzees had been harboring a deadly virus that sends its victims into a furious, murderous rage, and in the days following the initial exposure, the entire population was nearly wiped out due to the resulting homicidal rampage. Is there still a glimmer of hope for humanity — or has the deadly “rage” virus found its way to foreign shores and infected the entire planet?”
