Press and fan screenings of Alien: Romulus happened on Monday and any in-depth reviews are embargoed until Wednesday. But, social media users were eager to give their first thoughts on the Fede Alvarez film; overall they were impressed.
The film opens theatrically on August 16 so you won’t have to wait long to give your own opinion. Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter we thought we would give you a sampling of what people are saying in this, the eighth of the franchise.
From what we have read, one thing is for sure; the question of whether this franchise is considered more horror or sci-fi is answered. It appears that Alvarez (Evil Dead (2013)) has definitely put his signature on the entry. Some describe it as a “Blood chilling spectacle,” “a dripping bloody mess,” and, “pure nightmare fuel.”
Below is just a smattering of thoughts from early viewers. The only negative criticisms we could find were that some thought it had a slow start and the fan service was heavy-handed. let us know what you think of the film after you see it.
ALIEN: ROMULUS: Has all the great hallmarks of what you would expect in an Alien flick but never feels like it’s pandering to nostalgia or fan service…and even goes into a crazy new direction. Fede Alvarez & the cast just gave birth to summer’s best movie.

ALIEN ROMULUS scared the sh*t out of me just like the original did! The practical effects are insane aka pure nightmare fuel. Fede Álvarez delivers a blood chilling spectacle. Carnage galore with heart-pounding terror, Aliens fans are going to love it. #AlienRomulus pic.twitter.com/CDVCiMXAOM

This movie is so inventive with horror, thrills, and visuals while never crossing into gratuitous blood or gore. It emulates the original Alien movies so well.
I had to pick my jaw up off the floor in the third act. That was insane. Wow. pic.twitter.com/0XVQsx2tkQ
Alien Romulus does Justice to the Alien franchise, with a slightly slow start but when it gets going it never lets up and becomes a visceral experience at its finest. Great cast as well.#AlienRomulus #MovieEmporium pic.twitter.com/eI1QXM1dTD

Ladies and Gentlemen, Alien Romulus is by far the best movie of the year. It’s the best in the franchise, and may be my new favorite horror. Can’t wait to see it again and I’m so excited for the world to enjoy this masterpiece like we did tonight. -hat guy🦒 (video taken by the… pic.twitter.com/cDLj64ub27

ALIEN ROMULUS is so damn stunning. A dripping, bloody mess with eye-popping production design and a story that makes us give a damn even before it reveals connections to the past. One prolonged decision is dubious as hell-but it's a thrill ride only Fede Alvarez could deliver. pic.twitter.com/0LlTqw3S57

I should also add that there’s a few fan service moments that I, personally, would have minimized. Heard some critics focusing on those after the screening, but feel like they might be missing the forest for the trees a bit.
