Fede Álvarez walked into a tenth-anniversary screening of Don’t Breathe on Saturday night and walked out having announced a third one. There is a finished screenplay for Don’t Breathe 3, he told the room at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, and Jane Levy and Stephen Lang are both in it.

“There’s a screenplay for ‘Don’t Breathe 3.’ Jane will be back and Slang, (Stephen Lang), will be back,” Álvarez said during the Q&A that followed the September 26 screening. The panel had most of the 2016 film sitting on one stage: Álvarez, co-writer Rodo Sayagues, Levy, Lang, and Dylan Minnette, who played Alex. Minnette was not named among the returning cast.

The Blind Man Outlived the Movie He Was In

Lang’s Norman Nordstrom began as the obstacle. Three kids break into a house in a gutted stretch of Detroit expecting a soft target, and the blind veteran inside turns the lights off on people who can see. By the time Don’t Breathe 2 arrived in 2021, with Sayagues directing from a script he and Álvarez wrote together, Nordstrom was the lead, raising a girl in a farmhouse and asking the audience to take his side.

The numbers explain the five-year gap better than anything anyone said on stage. The original cost roughly $10 million and took $157 million worldwide. The sequel cost $15 million and finished a little over $53 million. Putting Rocky back in the house reads as the most direct correction available to that slide, and it returns the series to the setup that made the first one work: someone trapped in a building with Norman Nordstrom.

Levy and Álvarez Go Back Further Than This

Levy was Mia in Álvarez’s Evil Dead in 2013, three years before either of them touched this franchise, and that credit has been generating its own headlines lately. A rumor about Mia turning up in Evil Dead Wrath made the rounds earlier this month, unconfirmed and still unconfirmed. She also has the slasher River, which premiered at TIFF alongside Jessica Rothe.

Rocky has been off the board since 2016. She got out of that house with $300,000 and a crowbar she had put to use, and the sequel left her out of the story entirely, handing the franchise to Nordstrom. Ten years is a long time to bench a final girl who won.

The Open Question Is Who Directs

Álvarez said he has written it. He did not say he is shooting it, and the distinction matters with this filmmaker. He handed Don’t Breathe 2 to Sayagues and produced, and he wrote the Alien: Romulus sequel without taking the chair on that one either. A finished script from Álvarez is not a commitment to direct.

Sony Pictures Releasing has the franchise and has announced nothing: no production start, no cast beyond the two names, and no date, which is why the film is not yet on our 2026 and 2027 release calendar. Plot is being kept quiet, and after a sequel that moved the whole premise to a different house, that silence is worth something.

The name still unaccounted for is Minnette’s. He was sitting on that stage while the other two were being announced.
