Hot off her Oscar nominations for Harriet and her starring turn in Stephen King’s The Outsider on HBO, Cynthia Erivo is taking on the sci-fi thriller Carrier, based on the podcast from QCode.
The actress will play Raylene, a truck driver who accepts an off the books long haul to cover for her sick father. When she finds herself a target for groups both trying to control or destroy her cargo, she realizes that what she is hauling could be a threat to the entire world.
Erivo voiced the role of Raylene in the QCode podcast and will serve as a producer on the film alongside Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Automatik and QCode’s Rob Herting.
According to Deadline, this is the first film adaptation of one of QCode’s podcasts, though there are several others in the works at the moment.
“A great story can transcend its medium to find new forms and new audiences,” Jeb Brody, President of Production for Amblin Partners said in a statement. “Cynthia, Dan and QCode created a gripping and entertaining podcast that deserved all the praise and attention it garnered. We can’t wait to work with them to tell this story in its next evolution.”
The podcast won several awards and was featured on Best of 2019 lists on a plethora of sites. It was also named Apple’s Best Fiction Show of the Year.
Carrier joins a distinguished list of podcasts adapted for the large and small screen including Amazon’s Julia Roberts led Homecoming and the previously announced The Horror of Dolores Roach which is set to star Daphne Rubin-Vega and is currently in pre-production.
There is no release date set, yet, for the film.
