The Crypt Keeper is hosting FearFest 2026. AMC confirmed in a press release that the ghoul, voiced once again by John Kassir, will be the official host of this year’s event, which kicks off Thursday, October 1 on AMC and AMC+.

AMC is billing this as FearFest’s 30th anniversary, with more than 650 hours of horror films, franchises, new series and specials across the month. BACARDÍ Rum returns as presenting sponsor for a second year.

Two weeks ago, all anyone had was a cameo. When the Crypt Keeper turned up in AMC’s first FearFest 2026 promo, the network had not said what he was doing there. Now it has.

Now We Know What Nicotero’s Puppet Was For

In June, Shudder shared photos of Kassir posing with a newly built Crypt Keeper puppet from Greg Nicotero, and nobody said what it was for. This is what it was for. Per AMC, Nicotero re-created the puppet at his shop, KNB EFX, and directed the Crypt Keeper’s FearFest segments with AMC Global Media’s in-house branded studio, the Content Room. Kassir supplies the cackle.

“What a great honor and privilege to re-create this iconic character and get a chance to revisit some of his clever quips and puns with John Kassir again reprising his role,” Nicotero said in the release. “Having the chance to re-create Kevin Yagher’s amazing puppet at my studio KNB EFX and get the opportunity to ‘direct him’ in a series of FearFest spots was like going back in time and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.”

Kevin Yagher built the original puppet for HBO’s Tales from the Crypt, which ran seven seasons from 1989 to 1996, and Kassir has been the voice since the first episode, through Demon Knight, Bordello of Blood and the Saturday-morning Tales from the Cryptkeeper. Bringing Kassir back is the part that matters most. A Crypt Keeper with a new voice would be a different corpse.

Nicotero is a natural pair of hands for the job. He came up under Tom Savini on Day of the Dead, directs on The Walking Dead and ran Creepshow, the other great horror anthology to come out of the EC Comics tradition. He has been making dead things talk since 1985.

“FearFest has long been one of AMC’s most beloved horror traditions, and we couldn’t be happier to resurrect the Crypt Keeper as this year’s master of ‘scary-monies’ as we celebrate 30 years of FearFest,” said Kim Granito, chief marketing officer for AMC Global Media.

What FearFest Is Actually Airing

The Crypt Keeper is not just introducing other people’s movies. The lineup includes marathons of Tales from the Crypt itself, which answers the question our promo story left open. The rest of the announced slate:

  • The franchises: Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Final Destination and Insidious
  • The Stephen King library: IT (2017), the IT miniseries, The Shining, Misery and Christine
  • Series: the AMC premiere of The Terror: Devil in Silver, the Dan Stevens season that streamed on AMC+ and Shudder in May, plus AMC+’s new supernatural thriller YAGA, starring Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid and Hudson Williams
  • Themed marathons: “Fear the ’80s” (Silver Bullet, Christine, Poltergeist) and “Creature Feature” (Tremors, Lake Placid, Pet Sematary)

AMC has not released a day-by-day schedule yet, so exactly when the Tales from the Crypt marathons air is still unknown.

For a series that spent decades as one of horror’s great availability headaches, it has been quite a year. Tales from the Crypt made its streaming debut on Shudder in May, for anyone who would rather not wait for October. Our guide to the best horror on Shudder has the rest of what is worth watching on the service.
