The episode list for Mike Flanagan’s Carrie is less a list than a timetable. Prime Video has revealed all eight titles, every one named after a high school class, in order, so the season reads like a course load. (Class is now in session: we watched the series, and it left us mad but intrigued.)

  1. “First Period”
  2. “Foreign Language”
  3. “Social Studies”
  4. “Dramatic Arts”
  5. “Physical Education”
  6. “Home Economics”
  7. “Romantic Literature”
  8. “AP Physics”

Bloody Disgusting and Dread Central both carried the full slate on Tuesday. The first title is doing most of the work. “First Period” is the shower, the locker room, the chant, and the start of everything that follows it, and it is also just a line on a schedule. Stephen King’s 1974 novel opens on that exact collision, a private biological event turned public by a room full of people, and Flanagan has put it on the title card.

Reading the Course Load

The titles were laid out as Carrie White’s own schedule at Ewen High School, the school King named in the 1974 novel. The list gets more interesting the further down it goes. “Physical Education” at five is where the gym and Miss Desjardin live. “Home Economics” at six is about the least subtle way imaginable to title an hour of Margaret White. “Romantic Literature” at seven is where prom season would fall if the season is tracking the school year the way it appears to be. And then the finale is “AP Physics.”

Naming the last episode of a Carrie adaptation after the study of force and motion is a joke, and it is a good one. Nothing has been confirmed about what any of these episodes contain, so treat the reading as a reading. The titles are the announcement. The shape is inference.

Eight Episodes of the Year, Not the Night

That structure matches what the marketing has been signalling all along. The official trailer played the shower scene in full and then stayed entirely out of the gym: no crown, no dialogue from prom night at all. Eight hours buys Flanagan the whole school year, and the class schedule says he means to spend it there rather than sprinting for the last twenty minutes.

Flanagan is showrunner and writer, and he directs four of the eight episodes. Stephen King is an executive producer.

Who Is in the Class

Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, with Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, and Siena Agudong as Sue Snell. Alison Thornton plays Chris Hargensen and Joel Oulette plays Tommy Ross, which is to say the two names that decide how prom night goes. Josie Totah, Arthur Conti and Thalia Dudek round out the roster as Tina, Billy and Emaline.

Two of these names are already booked on Flanagan’s next project. He is producing the body horror film Rot, and Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard are going with him.
