Shudder has a new head of programming, and horror readers already know the byline. AMC Global Media announced Thursday that Angel Melanson has joined as Director of Programming for the service, where she will shape what the horror streamer buys, schedules and puts in front of subscribers.

Melanson reports to Courtney Thomasma, Executive Vice President of Linear and Streaming Products. “Angel is one of the most respected and well-connected voices in the horror community, with a deep understanding of the genre, its creators and fans,” Thomasma said in the announcement.

Where You Know Her From

Melanson spent more than five years at FANGORIA, most recently as digital editor running FANGORIA.com’s editorial strategy and daily operations, and along the way served as the magazine’s brand ambassador and West Coast correspondent. She is also the founder of Horror Girl Problems, the horror media platform and podcast she built on her own.

Shudder subscribers have already seen her face without necessarily catching the name: she appears in the service’s own Queer for Fear and in In Search of Darkness: Part III. That is an unusual line on a programming executive’s resume, and it is the point. She has interviewed the filmmakers, moderated the panels and written the coverage, which means she arrives knowing both the slate and the audience arguing about it.

Her old employer took the news well. “When I first met Angel in 2019, I knew she’d be an amazing asset to whatever company snapped her up,” FANGORIA SVP of editorial Phil Nobile Jr. wrote in the magazine’s own send-off.

Why This Job Matters More Than It Sounds

Shudder is not a general streamer with a horror shelf. It is a curated service, which means a single programming desk decides what its entire subscriber base is offered every month — the originals, the acquisitions, the repertory deep cuts, and the seasonal blocks that anchor October. That desk has been the most quietly influential job in horror streaming for a decade, and it has been in flux: Sam Zimmerman, the service’s original lead curator, left in January to become SVP of development and acquisitions at Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. The announcement does not frame Melanson as anyone’s replacement, and Shudder has not described how the two roles relate.

Melanson inherits it with a busy fall already loaded. V/H/S/MIXTAPE lands October 9, and The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula returns October 27 for a tenth-anniversary season. Those were programmed before she arrived. What 2027 looks like is the first real read on the hire.

Her first acquisitions will say more than the announcement did. The Shudder shelf she inherits is a big one.
