A handful of horror films have come along in recent years to expose the dangers of the internet, including last year’s movies The Den and Open Windows. Up next is Unfriended, a look at online bullying that couldn’t possibly be more topical or relevant.
Originally hitting the festival circuit under the delightfully corny title Cybernatural, Levan Gabriadze’s Open Windows stars Heather Sossaman as a young girl who commits suicide after embarrassing videos of her surface on the internet. One year later, the friends who destroyed her life gather online for a Skype chat, and find themselves virtually pursued by someone claiming to be their dead classmate.
Cyber bullying is very much an issue in our society, and real-life stories like the one that inspired this film are unfortunately far from uncommon. Quite frankly, Unfriended couldn’t possibly be coming along at a better time, so I’m very much looking forward to seeing how this very real issue works as a horror film.
In any event. Check out the trailer for Unfriended below, and look for it in theaters on April 17th!
