Hey Tightwads! It’s right in the middle of Scream Factory’s 5 Nights of Fear free streaming event, but in case you haven’t gotten your fill of free movies, here’s this week’s batch of gratis goodies…
Aftershock is about an American, appropriately called Gringo, who goes to a nightclub with a group of friends while visiting Chile. A massive earthquake cuts the fun short, the partiers having to find safety within the ruins of the city while dodging convicts who escaped their prison in the ruckus. Both suspenseful and gruesome, all you really need to know about this 2012 disaster exploitation flick is that it was produced and co-written by Eli Roth (who also stars as Gringo). Midnight is an unsung little 1982 gem about a teenage runaway who hitches a ride with a pair of petty thugs. The trio then finds itself being chased by a family of Satan worshippers who are looking for people to sacrifice in a ritual to raise the dead. This generically named shocker also goes by the equally generic name Backwoods Massacre, but the movie itself is way better than either title. Check out Midnight here at Popcornflix.
More of a political thriller than a horror movie, Arlington Road is about a widowed history professor who starts to believe that his new neighbors may be domestic terrorists. As not to spoil any of the cool twists and turns, that’s all of a synopsis of this 1999 potboiler that you’ll get here. Just know that you’ll need a seatbelt for this one. Fans of Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs will have fun with it. Also of note; it stars Jeff Bridges, Tim Robbins, and Joan Cusack. Catch Arlington Road here at Crackle.
In the late seventies, the re-entry of the space station Skylab was a huge media event, but it took another seven years before a movie would be made about it. The Falling is about three pals who, while vacationing in Spain, encounter alien beings who fell to Earth with Skylab and are now infecting and killing humans. This 1986 sci-fi horror flick is also known as Alien Predator (even though it was released after Alien but before Predator – go figure!). Dennis Christopher of Fade to Black/Breaking Away fame takes the lead in this one. Find The Falling right here at Vudu.
The Day of the Triffids
The Day of the Triffids is about a meteor shower that, while beautiful to look at, renders most of the population of the Earth blind. The real threat comes in the form of giant alien plants, of course called Triffids, that rise up and take advantage of the new-found disability of the humans. This 1963 sci-fi schlockfest is a sci-fi classic with a twist, a must-see for fans of fifties and sixties alien movies. It stars Janette Scott, Howard Keel, and Nicole Maurey, and was rumored to have been directed by an uncredited Freddie Francis. Watch The Day of the Triffids here at TubiTV, but shade your eyes!
