Bubba Ho-Tep is about Elvis Presley, not dead and living in a nursing home, teaming up with another resident, a black man who believes himself to be John F. Kennedy, to fight an ancient mummy that dresses as a cowboy. Written and directed by Don Coscarelli of Phantasm fame, this 2003 cult classic is just as crazy as it sounds. As if you needed more convincing, Bruce Campbell stars as Elvis, and Ossie Davis plays JFK. This is not your grandfather’s mummy movie. Check out Bubba Ho-Tep here at Vudu.
Devour is a 2005 thriller about a young man who gets involved with an alternate reality game called “The Pathway.” The alternate reality becomes too real when the game delves into devil worship, murder, and suicide. Anchored by a hip young cast that includes Shannon Sossamon, Jensen Ackles, Dominique Swain, William Sadler, and Teach Grant, Devour is a fun, if a bit derivative, little thriller that is good for a few good chills. Catch Devour here at Crackle.
Leaning more towards comedy than horror, Teen Wolf is about a high school student who discovers at the most inopportune time that he comes from a family of werewolves, and that he has inherited the lycanthropic gene. Made in 1985, this one is a bona-fide classic of the eighties, sort of like a John Hughes comedy version of I Was a Teenage Werewolf. Michael J. Fox stars in the title role. Years later, Teen Wolf would be adapted into a charmless MTV series, but you can find the original movie right here at TubiTV.
Insanitarium is about a guy who fakes his way into an insane asylum in order to save his institutionalized sister. Once inside, the pair uncovers a plot by one of the doctors to turn his patients into maniacal zombies. This 2008 straight-to-video gem boasts a surprisingly high-profile cast, with Jesse Metcalfe and Kiele Sanchez as the siblings, Olivia Munn as a sympathetic nurse, and Peter Stormare as the diabolical doctor. Insanitarium is a mashup of the old mental hospital trope and the older zombie trope, but if that doesn’t bother you, you can see it here at Crackle.
Speaking of surprisingly high-profile casts, The Uninvited stars Emily Browning as a young girl who is sent to a mental hospital after the death of her mother. She is discharged and sent home, but she is plagued by visions of her mother that hint to her that her mother’s death may not have been an accident…and the one responsible may be her new step-mother. Directed by the Guard Brothers, This 2009 spookfest is based on an old Korean folk tale which has been made into a handful of different movies. Besides Browning, the cast also features Elizabeth Banks as the step-mother, David Strathairn as the father, and Arielle Kebbel as a sister. Catch The Uninvited here at TubiTV.
