Hey Tightwads! Maybe it’s the Halloween Hangover, but the pickings are slim in internet-land, so keep an open mind with this week’s batch of free movies. There’s some fringey horror stuff in there. Like this first one…
The Warriors is Walter Hill’s 1979 slightly post-apocalyptic exploitation flick about a New York City street gang who is framed for a murder while at a conclave in The Bronx and must fight their way back home to Coney Island. And every gang – and cop – in the city is gunning for them. This is an absolute classic of seventies cinema. Tons are familiar faces populate the cast, people like Michael Beck, James Remar, Terry Michos, David Patrick Kelly, Dorsey Wright, and Deborah Van Valkenburgh. It also features a bitchin’ Joe Walsh theme song. Stop what you’re doing right now and watch The Warriors right here at Crackle.
Army of Frankensteins
Army of Frankensteins is about a young man who is abducted and subjected to terrible medical experiments which hope to re-animate a corpse. Instead, the procedure rips a whole in the space-time continuum and sends the guy back to the Civil War where he finds an entire army made up of Frankenstein’s monsters (so it’s not just a clever name). This 2013 indie schlockfest is pretty silly in a SyFy original movie/Asylum productions kind of way, but that’s par for the course with modern low budget horror. Have some fun with Army of Frankensteins here at ShoutFactory TV.
Shutter Island Martin Scorsese’s 2010 Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle about a U.S. Marshall who is tasked with finding a convicted murderer who disappeared from an island mental institution. When he gets stranded there by a hurricane, the Marshall discovers that there is more to the story than he was led to believe. Shutter Island is Scorsese and DiCaprio at their best, and it also features a strong support cast that includes Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Jackie Earle Haley, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer, and Max von Sydow. Oh, and it’s got one of those shocking, Shyamalanian twist endings. Check out Shutter Island right here at Crackle.
The generically titled Home Invasion is about a woman who kills a would-be home invader. At a victim’s support group, the dead criminal’s girlfriend befriends the woman and sets out to make her life a living hell. Home Invasion is a 2012 television movie (from the Lifetime Network no less), so it’s a bit tame, but fans of stalker movies should get a kick out of it. The cast includes Haylie Duff, Lisa Sheridan, C. Thomas Howell, Jason Brooks, and Barbara Niven (remember – Lifetime Network). Catch Home Invasion here at TubiTV.
Necromancy is about a man who leads an entire town in rituals that he believes will bring the dead back to life. When he meets a new resident, he thinks he has found the missing ingredient to revive his dead son. Directed by B-movie mogul Bert I. Gordon in 1972, Necromancy stars the inimitable Orson Wells as the necromancer and Pamela Franklin as the woman who holds the key to his success. See Necromancy right here at Popcornflix.
