Back in 1979, director Ridley Scott brought to life one of the true classics of sci-fi/horror: Alien. While James Cameron would take over the helm for the equally classic first sequel Aliens in 1986, the Alien franchise has always remained associated with Scott. The legendary filmmaker finally returned to the Alien universe with 2012’s Prometheus, a more sci-fi focused prequel set long before the Nostromo’s fateful encounter with a xenomorph. Reactions to that film were mixed, but it did well enough to spawn a follow-up, entitled Alien: Covenant.
Alien: Covenant is kind of a sequel to Prometheus – and features the return of Michael Fassbender’s fan favorite character David – and kind of a direct prequel to the original Alien. 20th Century FOX has just dropped the first trailer for Covenant on us, just in time for Christmas. It can be seen in full below, and seems to have a much more dark and horrific tone than did Prometheus. This holiday season, get that special someone a facehugger. They’ll thank you later. At dinner to be exact.
Alien: Covenant invades theaters on May 19th, 2017. Hopefully this movie erases the bad taste left in horror fans’ mouths by the most recent theatrical appearance of a proper xenomorph in 2007’s dreadful Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.
