For more than two decades, horror fans have been frequently reminded of the grand accomplishments that Anthony Hopkins attained as Dr. Hannibal Lecter despite minimal screen time in The Silence of the Lambs. While true, we can’t help but point to the wondrous words that have haunted our collective memory since Pinhead first appeared in theatres thirty years ago.
Doug Bradley may have portrayed the high priest of Hell on eight separate occasions, but despite the fact that Hellraiser fans ventured out to see what delicious dialogue he would unleash from the bowels of Hades, never was Pinhead the centerpiece for which an entire film revolved. No, Pinhead was always rationed in careful measure, but what sights the lead Cenobite had to show us during those brief glimpses.
Short bursts though they were, today we celebrate Clive Barker’s greatest creation, and present nine of Pinhead’s finest moments of pleasure and pain, one for each ring of Hell.
Pinhead is forever, after all. So, shall we begin?
9 — WE HAVE SUCH SIGHTS TO SHOW YOU (Hellraiser, 1987)
One of the genre’s great heroines, Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) had to start somewhere.
8 — DO I LOOK LIKE SOMEONE WHO CARES WHAT GOD THINKS? (Hellraiser: Bloodline, 1996)
“Then complete your work.”
7 — NOT QUITE (Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, 1992)
“If you have a quality, be proud of it. Let it define you, whatever it is.”
6– BUT TRICK US AGAIN, CHILD… (Hellbound: Hellraiser II, 1988)
This is the last thing you want to hear coming out of that dude’s mouth.
5 — I AM PAIN (Hellraiser: Bloodline, 1996)
Word of warning: That was not the safe word.
4 — DON’T DEBATE WITH ME, GIRL! (Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, 1992)
“Ohhh, spirited. Oh, good. Oh, very good.”
3 — SO EAGER TO PLAY, SO RELUCTANT TO ADMIT IT (Hellbound: Hellraiser II, 1988)
“But please, fell free. Explore.”
2 — WE’LL TEAR YOUR SOUL APART (Hellraiser, 1987)
“The box. You opened it. We came.” So it began.
1 — I AM THE WAY (Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, 1992)
Easily the “Oh, shit” moment of the franchise, along with the funniest line for good measure.
