Simon Pegg and Jeffrey Combs Join Star-Studded Anthology Flick ‘The Gathering’

Published

on

One long forgotten horror sub-genre that finally seems to be experiencing a resurgence in recent years is the anthology film. While we’re still a long way from the days of classics like Creepshow, Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, and Trilogy of Terror, films like Trick ‘r Treat, VHS, and The ABC’s of Death are helping to inject a new spark of life into the concept of telling a series of short horror stories in the body of a feature film. The latest entry in the horror anthology canon is producer/director Jon Keeyes’  star-studded film The Gathering.

The premise of The Gathering is that literary horror icons Mary Shelley, H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, and Bram Stoker are all gathered together by The Devil himself on Halloween night, and tasked with telling their best previously untold stories.

The winning scribe will finally get to leave purgatory and move on to the next phase of his or her after life. The tales told by the authors will be original, but will also stick to the styles they are best known for. Stoker will spin a vampire yarn, while Lovecraft relays a Re-Animator-esque tale of death and resurrection. According to Keeyes, the film’s segments will also include horror staples like werewolves, zombies, ghosts, and slashers.

The Gathering’s latest cast additions are Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) and Jeffrey Combs (the aforementioned Re-Animator). Pegg will bring a darkly comedic incarnation of Satan to life, while Combs will return to the role of Edgar Allan Poe. Combs previously played Poe – to great effect – in Stuart Gordon’s Masters of Horror episode The Black Cat.

Other huge genre names already in the cast include An American Werewolf in London’s David Naughton, Hellraiser’s Doug Bradley and Ashley Laurence, The Devil’s Rejects’ Bill Moseley, Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Gunnar Hansen, and Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund. If that cast doesn’t make you want to watch this movie, nothing will. Production is tentatively scheduled to begin in May 2015.

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has given this film an “R” rating for its “bloody images,” hinting at the visceral and intense experience awaiting viewers. Winnie the Pooh 3

Wow, they’re churning things out fast! The upcoming sequel “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3” is officially moving forward, promising an expanded narrative with a larger budget and the introduction of beloved characters from A.A. Milne’s original tales. As confirmed by Variety, the third installment in the horror franchise will welcome Rabbit, the heffalumps, and the woozles into its dark and twisted narrative.

This sequel is a part of an ambitious cinematic universe that reimagines children’s stories as horror tales. Alongside “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” and its first sequel, the universe includes films such as “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare”, “Bambi: The Reckoning,” and “Pinocchio Unstrung”. These movies are set to converge in the crossover event “Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble,” slated for a 2025 release.

The creation of these films was made possible when A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book “Winnie-the-Pooh” entered the public domain last year, allowing filmmakers to explore these cherished characters in unprecedented ways. Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Jeffrey Chambers, of Jagged Edge Productions, have led the charge in this innovative endeavor.

The inclusion of Rabbit, heffalumps, and woozles in the upcoming sequel introduces a new layer to the franchise. In Milne’s original stories, heffalumps are imagined creatures resembling elephants, while woozles are known for their weasel-like characteristics and a penchant for stealing honey. Their roles in the narrative remain to be seen, but their addition promises to enrich the horror universe with deeper connections to the source material.
