In a dystopian future, man’s attempt to create artificial intelligence has spun wildly out of control, leading to a war between man and machine. This is the premise for Rise, a stunning and well-received short film that will be adapted into a full-length feature.
David Karlack – who recently directed the Alien: Covenant VR experience – created the original 5-minute short and is on board to direct the film adaptation.
Rise was written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (the duo behind Feast and The Collector). According to IMDb, both are slated to write the script for the full-length feature. The short stars Rufus Sewell (Bless the Child) and the late Anton Yelchin.
Rise has been picked up by Hacksaw Ridge producer Brian Oliver and Filmula’s Johnny Lin for development. They obtained the rights through Warner Bros. with their sights set on developing a franchise.
As Variety reports:
“Brian and I are extremely excited to have an opportunity to build a film franchise based on David Karlak’s wildly popular short,” Lin said. “I hope this is the start to a long-lasting financing and producing relationship.”
Lin is an executive producer on Tom Cruise’s upcoming crime thriller American Made. Oliver received a best picture Oscar nomination as a producer of Black Swan, and also produced Black Mass, A Walk Among the Tombstones, and Everest. He’s the founder of Cross Creek and is in post-production on American Made.
