Starting in 1979, the Alien franchise has grown into something much bigger than just a solitary science fiction horror film. And it looks like it’s going to keep growing.
During a sit down with Fandango at SXSW in Texas for a screening of the original film, director Ridley Scott dropped some pretty hefty news about the possibility of any future Alien movies. He may have even dropped the title for the one that follows Covenant.
Here are the most important snippets from the interview:
“There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien.”
When asked about the chronology of the films:
“It will go Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant.. fairly integral where this colonization ship is on the way … If this is successful [meaning Covenant], and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more.”
So, while the answers were pretty fragmented, one may be led to believe that the next film will be called Awakening, and fall during the time period between Prometheus and Covenant. Which, to be honest, seems a bit convoluted. Could he have possibly meant to say that Awakening will come after Covenant? Was it a case of mixed-up words, or are we in for a fairly complex Alien timeline?
It’s too early to tell, but this is great news for any fan of the franchise. There are those who think it should have ended after the original, but I disagree. I think that, for the most part, the franchise has been extremely enjoyable. In fact, I would go on to say that the only one I really wasn’t head over heels about what Aliens, but I know for a fact that I’m pretty much alone on that one. Honesty is the best policy, though, right?
Alien: Covenant will be released on May 19th. Check out the trailer below!
