The next Fourth of July will see the opening of the fourth movie in The Purge franchise. It will be the first movie not to be directed by James DeMonaco. Instead, he has hand-picked a fresh face to helm the movie. DeMonaco is still on board in other ways, however, as he still serves as the film’s writer.
DeMonaco has selected Gerard McMurray to direct the next film after his work directing Burning Sands. DeMonaco stated that “I have not seen a film as confidently directed in a long time as Burning Sands, and I’m excited to see Gerard’s own expression of the Purge world.”
Though we have no word on what the next Purge film will be about, we will be able to find out on July 4th, 2018 when the movie is released. It is being produced once again by Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes. Jason Blum, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form all have names attached to the project. And if the previous entries are any indication of what’s to come, the next film will undoubtedly be great.
Frank Grillo’s involvement with the movie is up in the air as of now. Earlier this year, he stated that he is on the fence about returning during an interview with Collider. From the interview:
“After Anarchy, Universal called me and said, ‘You’ve got a franchise. We’re gonna continue with this, if you wanna do this.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, this is great!’ And so, when Election Year was even more successful, they were like, ‘Let’s keep doing this!’ I was like, ‘Maybe. I think I might be done, but you should keep doing it!’”
“If DeMonaco was still involved and they came up with a great idea, then I think I would do [another Purge movie]. Otherwise, I think I’m done. … I’m appreciative of The Purge. It’s become a part of the lexicon and the zeitgeist knows what it is, so that’s been fun. But, it’s time to move on. Don’t stay at the party too long, or you get knocked through the ropes.”
We know that DeMonaco is involved, and he is writing the story, so here’s to hoping that the ideas within are great enough for Grillo to return.
