We may have just achieved peak ’90s nostalgia.
In a surprising development, Deadline reports today that Kiefer Sutherland has joined the cast of Flatliners, a remake of the 1990 thriller that starred… Kiefer Sutherland. The actor, who played a medical student by the name of Nelson Wright in the Joel Schumacher-directed original, will this time around play a character described as “a seasoned doctor.” An older Nelson, perhaps?
The site notes that Sutherland’s deal is not closed, but he has committed to the project.
Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (the Swedish Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), the Flatliners remake will also star Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens.
The original Flatliners cast included Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt. The thriller followed five medical students who decide to trigger near-death experiences by purposely stopping their hearts. However, as they delve more into their work, the experiments become more and more dangerous and even scary as they are forced to confront the sins of their pasts as well as contend with the paranormal consequences of crossing a line to the other side.
The film goes into production in Toronto later this week.
