In Prevenge, a soon-to-be mother goes on a killing spree, as instructed and motivated by her strangely articulate unborn child. How’s that for a premise.
Even better, the film has just been acquired by North American streaming service Shudder, so you don’t have to wait long before you can enjoy this mother of a horror-comedy from the comfort of your own home.
Alice Lowe (Sightseers, Hot Fuzz) plays triple-duty as the writer, director and star of the film. But there’s no fake baby bellies here; Lowe made Prevenge as she, herself, was seven-months pregnant.
If you’ve seen Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers, you’re familiar with Lowe’s particular style of dark humor. She co-wrote and starred in the film, demonstrating her deadpan delivery and brilliant comedic timing.
Prevenge is about a pregnant woman – Ruth (Alice Lowe) – whose partner died in a climbing accident when he was cut loose by the rest of his group. Ruth becomes convinced that her fetus is compelling her to murder and she tracks down the other people who were involved in the climbing accident for revenge.
Prevenge, Lowe’s directorial debut, impressed a lot of critics on the festival circuit and will screen next month at the SXSW Film Festival under the “Festival Favorites” section. The film will have a limited theatrical release in Los Angeles and New York, and will be available on Shudder as of March 24, 2017.
