In the new trailer for Happy Death Day, we see what would happen if Groundhog Day involved more murder and less hijinx. A college student/sorority girl named Tree (I know) must relive her birthday (or death day) until she finds out who is the depraved maniac in the baby mask (appropriate for birthday murder) and why they want to kill her. It’s like Edge of Tomorrow, but with no Tom Cruise training montage. And more mystery!
Happy Death Day is written and directed by Christopher Landon, of Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse fame. While that shows he can blend horror and comedy, he’s also got quite a bit of experience working with straight horror. Landon wrote Paranormal Activities 2, 3, and 4, and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones – which he also directed.
It’s produced by Universal Studios and Jason Blum of Blumhouse – a name we’ve come to respect in the horror genre with titles like Get Out, Insidious, The Purge, and Split. The trailer looks like a lot of fun and any time I see Jason Blum’s name attached to a project, I get excited.
Happy Death Day stars Jessica Rothe (La La Land), Israel Broussard (The Bling Ring), and Ruby Modine (Shameless). It opens on Friday, October 13 (on a side note, how fantastic is it that there’s a Friday the 13th in October this year? No? Just me? Ok).
