Well, holy jumping shark shit! Nearly twenty years after the original shark attack film with Samuel L. Jackson splashed its way into theaters back in 1999, it looks like the long talked about sequel Deep Blue Sea 2 is finally a go! But umm, yeah if you remember the film at all, don’t expect a Samuel L. appearance.
As a matter of fact, it’s highly unlikely any of the original cast will return for the sequel as Moviehole confirms that the upcoming movie is being made for the small screen and to be premiered on the SyFy channel. However, the news site did assert cast members Michael Beach (Aquaman) and Darin Scott (House Party: Tonight’s the Night) are set to star and the film is currently being filmed in Cape Town.
Although plot details are slightly in short supply, the basis for the film per the website as we have learned seems to be a film centered around a Dr. Klaus Van Etten experimenting on bull sharks. Misty and her team of marine experts argue the doctor’s methods. Sharks get out, and that’s when the proverbial poo hits the fan.
It really should be no surprise the shark loving network of SyFy picked up this gem after a failed Warner Bros. attempt at making a sequel to the 1999 film. What with the pleasant success of the Sharknado franchise, and such movies as The Shallows and more recently 47 Meters Down doing well via the Box Office, it seems like a good time to let loose with sharks with fricking laser beams attached to their heads? I mean, original scriptwriter for the Warner Bros. adaptation of Deep Blue Sea 2, Jack Perez was going to do it. Doesn’t seem too far-fetched if SyFy hops on that.
More details coming soon!
