After a long wait, it looks like our prayers to Kira have been answered and we’ve been given a first look into the Netflix adaptation of DEATH NOTE! Based on the original supernatural thriller series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, this adaption is directed by Adam Wingard of You’re Next and The Guest. The story follows student Light Turner (played by Nat Wolff of Paper Towns) as he discovers the titular mysterious Death Note with the uncanny ability to kill anyone whose name he writes in it. Light decides to use the divine artifact to cleanse the world of those he see as evil and declare himself God. Like anyone would in the situation.
All to the amusement of the notebook’s original owner, an immortal death god named Ryuk, who’s voiced by Willem DaFoe of Antichrist and Spider-Man. From the trailer, Dafoe as the supernatural entity is already creepy as hell. Only showing his glowing eyes and revealing his sinister voice in the dark, standing out quite a bit. Also joining the cast, based on the original story and characters are Margaret Qualley of The Leftovers as Mia Sutton, Light’s love interest/devout follower and Lakeith Stanfield of Get Out as “L” the mysterious master detective who investigates the unbelievable murder spree.
The movie will drop on Netflix August 25th, with the full original anime series currently available on the service as well.
