In the film, Dave, an artist, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration. He is subsequently lost inside his own creation, trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, critters and booby traps that lie within. His girlfriend must form a rag-tag rescue team to try to find him. As one does.
The new teaser trailer gives us a look into the bizarre aforementioned maze, showing the brilliant design and insane ambiance that – we can hope – carries through the whole film. It looks… ridiculous, and I cannot wait.
This is the directorial debut of actor Bill Watterson. It will premiere in competition at the upcoming Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, which runs from January 20 to January 26.
A statement from the director posted to the film’s official website explains the inspiration for the film. “I wanted to explore the mad fantasy worlds and heightened realities of a Labyrinth or a Legend,” Watterson says, “But to see that journey taken by foul-mouthed adults rather than a band of plucky tweens. Who doesn’t still want to be a Goonie who never says die?”
Watterson references the various practical effects that were involved in creating this madhouse. Puppetry, stop motion animation, cut paper animation, and optical illusions are all used to recreate that “tactile sense of wonder” from some of our favorite childhood films.
Dave Made a Maze stars Nick Thune, Meera Rohit Kumbhani, Adam Busch, James Urbaniak, Stephanie Allynne, Kirsten Vangsness, Scott Krinsky, and John Hennigan. I also caught the brief appearance of Timothy Nordwind, who you may know from the viral video music group, Ok Go.
Overall, it looks like one heck of a fun time. Check out the teaser trailer below.
